Minecraft Biomes Guide

Minecraft Biomes: Complete Guide to Every Biome (2026)

Snowy peaks, burning deserts, glowing caves and pink cherry forests: every place you walk in Minecraft belongs to a biome. Minecraft biomes decide the weather, trees, mobs, structures and resources around you, so picking the right one can make survival easy or brutal. This guide explains what biomes are, lists every major biome group in the Overworld, caves, Nether and End, covers the newest 2026 biomes, and shows which biome is best for your goal.

Everything here applies to the latest Minecraft APK, Bedrock Edition and Java Edition.

Minecraft Biomes Guide

What Are Minecraft Biomes?

A biome is a region of the world with its own climate, colours, plants, animals and structures. Minecraft has more than 60 biomes across the Overworld, the Nether and the End. Temperature and rainfall decide whether it snows or rains, how green the grass looks and which mobs spawn. The Minecraft Wiki biome list has every variant. Since the Caves and Cliffs update, there are also underground cave biomes stacked below the surface.

Why Minecraft Biomes Matter

  • Resources: wood types, sand, clay, ores and crops depend on the biome.
  • Mobs: camels in deserts, pandas in bamboo jungles, foxes in taigas, frogs in swamps.
  • Structures: villages, temples, mansions and ancient cities only appear in certain biomes.
  • Difficulty: some biomes are calm and safe, others are dangerous or short on food.
  • Building style: each biome inspires a different kind of house design.

Overworld Minecraft Biomes

1. Plains and Meadows

Flat grassland with horses, cows, sheep and villages. Plains are the easiest place to start: open space for building, lots of food and friendly villagers to trade with.

2. Forests (Oak, Birch, Dark Forest)

Endless wood and wolves you can tame. Dark Forests are thick and shadowy, so mobs spawn even in the day, and they hide Woodland Mansions full of illagers and loot.

3. Cherry Grove

Pink cherry blossom trees on mountain slopes, with falling petals and pink wood. One of the most popular biomes for builders and screenshots.

4. Dappled Forest (New in 2026)

Added in the Wilderness Bound game drop in September 2026. Poplar trees with red, orange and yellow leaves, red shrubs, bouncy shelf mushrooms and abandoned camps make it perfect for cosy autumn builds.

5. Pale Garden

A grey, eerie forest of pale oak trees and hanging moss, home to the Creaking, a mob that only moves when you are not looking at it.

6. Taiga and Snowy Taiga

Cold spruce forests with sweet berries, foxes and wolves, plus taiga villages. Snowy versions have snow on the ground and can hide igloos.

7. Desert

Sand, cactus and dead bushes, with desert temples, desert wells and villages. Food and wood are rare, and husks replace normal zombies. Great for collecting sand to make glass.

8. Savanna

Warm, dry grassland with flat-topped acacia trees, horses, llamas and armadillos. Savanna villages are common.

9. Jungle and Bamboo Jungle

Huge trees, vines, melons, cocoa beans, parrots and ocelots. Bamboo jungles add pandas. Jungle temples hide traps and treasure.

10. Swamp and Mangrove Swamp

Murky water, lily pads, slimes, frogs and witch huts. Mangrove swamps add twisting mangrove trees and mud.

11. Mountains and Peaks

Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, Stony Peaks, Snowy Slopes and Groves. Mountain biomes are the only place emerald ore generates, and goats roam the cliffs.

12. Badlands

Red sand and colourful terracotta layers. Badlands have extra gold ore near the surface and mineshafts that show up above ground.

13. Snowy Plains and Ice Spikes

Freezing white plains with polar bears and strays. Ice Spikes is a rare variant with tall towers of packed ice, perfect for fast ice-boat roads.

14. Mushroom Fields

Rare islands covered in mycelium, giant mushrooms and mooshrooms. Hostile mobs do not spawn naturally here, making it one of the safest places in the game.

15. Oceans, Rivers and Beaches

Warm oceans have coral reefs and tropical fish; cold and frozen oceans have icebergs. Look for shipwrecks, ocean ruins, buried treasure and ocean monuments, and watch out for drowned.
