Minecraft Zombies

Minecraft Zombies: Types, Spawning, Drops and How to Beat Them

The groan in the dark, the slow shuffle towards your door, the green arms stretched out in front: zombies are the first enemy almost every player meets. They look simple, but there are several types, each with its own tricks. This guide covers everything about Minecraft zombies: every variant, where and when they spawn, what they drop, how to beat them, how to keep them out of your base, and how to turn a zombie villager back into a villager.

The facts apply to the latest Minecraft APK, Bedrock Edition and Java Edition, with differences noted where they matter.

What Are Minecraft Zombies?

Full stats are on the Minecraft Wiki zombie page. Minecraft zombies are common undead hostile mobs that walk towards you and attack in melee. They have been in the game since its earliest days and are still one of the most common threats at night and underground.

Types of Minecraft Zombies

1. Zombie

The classic green zombie. It spawns in darkness almost everywhere in the Overworld and burns when it stands in direct sunlight without a helmet.

2. Baby Zombie

Among all Minecraft zombies, babies are the trickiest. About 5% of zombies spawn as babies. They have the same 20 health but run much faster, fit through 1-block gaps and never grow up. Some even ride chickens as “chicken jockeys”. Because they are small and quick, they are often more dangerous than adults.

3. Husk

The desert zombie. Husks do not burn in sunlight, so they can chase you at noon. Their hits also give you the Hunger effect. If a husk stays underwater for 30 seconds it turns into a normal zombie.

4. Drowned

Underwater zombies found in oceans and rivers. They can swim and breathe underwater, and some carry a trident they throw at you. Drowned are the only source of tridents, and some hold a nautilus shell. A normal zombie that stays underwater too long turns into a drowned.

5. Zombie Villager

A villager that was turned by a zombie, or one that spawned that way. It looks like a zombie with a villager’s nose and clothes. The best part: you can cure it. See how to cure a zombie villager below.

6. Zombified Piglin

Found in the Nether. These are neutral: they leave you alone unless you attack one, and then every zombified piglin nearby joins the fight. Never hit one unless you are ready for a big group battle. Learn how to get there in our guide on how to make portals in Minecraft.

7. Frostbite (Preview)

The newest zombie variant, added in the Minecraft Preview 26.60 builds. It lives in the new Ice Caves biome, switches between melee attacks and throwing ice balls, and its hits can give the new Freezing effect. It is not in the stable release yet.

Where and When Do Zombies Spawn?

  • In complete darkness: in modern versions, hostile mobs like zombies spawn only where the block light level is 0. Older guides that say “light level 7 or lower” are out of date.
  • At night on the surface, and at any time of day in caves, dark rooms and under thick trees.
  • From spawners in dungeons, which keep producing zombies while you are nearby.
  • In zombie villages, abandoned villages full of zombie villagers.
  • During village sieges (Java Edition), when a large group can appear around a village at midnight.
  • Not in mushroom fields or the deep dark.

How Minecraft Zombies Behave

  • They follow simple rules: once you learn how Minecraft zombies think, they are easy to predict.
  • They hunt players, villagers and wandering traders, and attack iron golems and baby turtles.
  • They trample turtle eggs, so protect your turtle beach.
  • They burn in sunlight unless they wear a helmet, stand in water or shade, or are husks.
  • They pick up weapons and armor they walk over, and some spawn already equipped.
  • They break wooden doors on Hard difficulty. Iron doors are safe.
  • They call for help: on Hard, hurting a zombie can summon reinforcements nearby.
  • They turn villagers into zombie villagers, always on Hard and sometimes on Normal.

How to Fight Minecraft Zombies

  1. Use the right weapon: a sword or axe works up close. Enchant your sword with Smite, which does extra damage to all undead mobs.
  2. Hit and step back: attack, then back off so the zombie cannot hit you, then attack again.
  3. Use a bow or crossbow for groups or drowned in the water.
  4. Wear armor: even iron armor makes a big difference on Hard.
  5. Fight in the open at dawn: sunlight finishes off many zombies for you.
  6. Watch for babies: deal with fast baby zombies first.

How to Keep Zombies Away From Your Base

  • Light everything: darkness is what Minecraft zombies need, so place torches or lanterns inside and around your house stop spawns completely.
  • Use iron doors or fence gates on Hard difficulty.
  • Build a wall or fence around your base and farms.
  • Sleep at night to skip the dangerous hours.
  • Make iron golems to guard villages.

How to Cure a Zombie Villager

  1. Trap the zombie villager in a covered, dark place so it does not burn in daylight.
  2. Throw a Splash Potion of Weakness at it.
  3. While it is weakened, give it a Golden Apple (use the apple on it).
  4. It starts shaking with red particles. Wait a few minutes; the cure takes roughly 3 to 5 minutes.
  5. It turns back into a villager, and cured villagers give you big trade discounts.

A golden apple is made from 1 apple and 8 gold ingots. A Potion of Weakness needs a fermented spider eye in a water bottle, plus gunpowder to make it a splash potion.

What Do Zombies Drop and Why Farm Them?

  • Rotten flesh: emergency food (it can give Hunger), a trade item for cleric villagers, and wolf food.
  • Rare drops: iron ingots, carrots and potatoes, only when killed by a player or tamed wolf.
  • Equipment: armor or weapons they were carrying can sometimes drop.
  • Experience: a zombie spawner farm is one of the easiest early XP sources for enchanting.
  • Tridents: only from drowned.

Fun Facts About Minecraft Zombies

  • A zombie wearing any helmet does not burn in sunlight.
  • Baby zombies never grow up.
  • In Java Edition, rare zombie “leaders” can spawn with much more health than normal.
  • Zombies, husks and drowned are all connected: water turns husks into zombies, and zombies into drowned.

Final Thoughts

Minecraft zombies are simple to understand once you know their types and rules. Keep your base lit, use iron doors on Hard, carry a Smite sword, watch out for fast babies and trident-throwing drowned, and leave zombified piglins alone. Cure zombie villagers for cheap trades, and turn spawners into XP farms. Master these basics and the night stops being scary. Want a break from survival? Try some Minecraft minigames.
